Reunion Blues Vintage Guitar Show - Part 1

Reunion Blues has started a series of Vintage Guitar Road Shows, and invited Premier Guitar to join in and be a sponsor. The first one held at Bananas at Large in San Rafael, Ca saw some very nice collectible guitars. The owner of an '57 Gibson L5C brought in his guitar to be appraised and found out it was worth approximately $8000, it would have been worth more if it hadn't been modified. More shows are planned across the U.S.

The rumors were true. After years of calls from the legions of Satriani faithful, Ibanez was going to offer a collector's edition of virtuoso rock guitarist Joe Satriani's storied "Black Dog" electric guitar. And at the very last minute, the guitar was added to the Ibanez Booth display at the Summer 2008 NAMM musical instrument convention in Nashville.

The Ibanez JS "Black Dog" Tribute is a faithful recreation of Joe Satriani's legendary late-eighties/early-nineties axe. Like Joe's actual Black Dog, the recreation features the original pot locations and output jack style -- different than the current Satriani signature model -- as well as DiMarzio PAF Pro and Fred pickups and the original Ibanez Edge tremolo system. In addition the JS neck and finish on the Tribute are treated by Ibanez's most experienced luthiers.

But it's the Black Dog finish that especially stands out: laboriously recreated by hand, one at a time, by just one highly skilled artist, are the drawings that Joe would apply to the original Black Dog body as the spirit moved him. Ibanez took photographs of the original Black Dog and used the shots to create a sort of "graphic map" that the Japanese artist uses to render with amazing exactitude Satriani's original drawings.

The list price of the JSBDG is $7999.99, which includes many exclusive and special 20th anniversary items including an autographed copy of the Surfing with the Alien Legacy CD, a deluxe hardshell case, and exclusive Planet Waves Joe Satriani strap and Satriani Planet Waves signature picks by D'Addario Co.

The collector's item guitar is reported to be limited to 100 pieces worldwide with 60 of those destined for the United States.

Check out this cool re-do of the Watkins Dominator by Fritz Brothers Guitars. It's just like the original with a corner front design and two 10" speakers. Fritz Bros loads it with EL84's and 12AX7's; they use most of the original circuit design but have put some special touches under the hood, too. The mono version is featured in the vid below, but the company is also working on a stereo version and a bass version.

For a company to claim that it has made an "innovative, new guitar" isn't that unusual. For the guitar in question to back up that claim is quite unusual. That's what Moog has done with the new Moog guitar.

The buzz at Summer NAMM '08 in Nashville was all about the Moog, even before the official press conference took place. The video below recaps the press conference and shows plenty of demo footage.

The guitar itself has to be heard but here's our attempt at a brief description: the guitar utilizes pickups that can push or pull the energy from the strings in a number of ways. The guitar produces harmonics that have a life of their own, yet are within a controlled range that can be easily manipulated by the player. The guitar can achieve true infinite sustain with mere tapping but can also suppress note length for entirely different sounds. With a responsiveness to the player that redefines the notion of articulation, the Moog guitar really does open up a new world of expressive possibilities for guitarists. Check out the clip!
